Valpo YMCA to offer 3-on-3 hoops cash prizes

The Valparaiso Family YMCA is ready to help the best local 3-on-3 basketball team beat the bad economy blues by offering two cash prizes for top finishers at its Sept. 22 tournament.

With registration open through Sept. 1 at the Y, located at 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive in Valparaiso, tournament coordinators are seeking adult competitors. Games start at 10 a.m. and the eventual first- and second-place winning teams will earn $500 and $300, respectively.

Additionally, the funds raised at the tournament will be used to provide affordable sports programs and safe equipment for area youth. Cost is $200 per team.

Sign-ups for the Portage Township Department of Parks & Recreation’s co-ed and men’s softball leagues and mushball league have been extended to 3 p.m. Friday. The leagues will each feature 12 games played over six weeks and the fee is $340 per team. The co-ed league will play on Tuesdays, while the mushball league will play on Wednesdays and the men’s league will play on Thursdays.

The co-ed and men’s leagues will include double-elimination tournaments. Games will be played on Fessler Fields at Haven Hollow Park (330 W. 700 N., Valparaiso) beginning the week of at 6 p.m. Aug. 27.

Lake County Parks will present a variety of golf-related activities at the Cedar Creek Family Golf Center located at 10483 W. 109th Avenue in Cedar Lake.

Area golfers are invited to come to the driving range three times a week — on Aug. 20, 21, 22; Sept. 10, 11, 12; or Sept. 24, 25, 26 — for lunch and lessons with a golf instructor. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., golf tips are free with purchase of a medium or large bucket of balls from the clubhouse.

Grandchildren can treat grandfathers and grandmothers to a free game of miniature golf on Grandparents Day, Sept. 9. For more information, call 365-2902.

A fall junior golf league will run on Tuesdays from Sept. 4 to Oct. 23 with registration taken through the first day of play. This non-instructional, non-competitive league is for golfers with at least one season of experience on the golf course. Tee times are at 4 p.m. Fees are $60 for kids ages 10 to 17 and $40 for 5- to 9-year-olds.

Registration for the fall indoor soccer league at Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Club (723 Long Run Road, Valparaiso) begins Aug. 27.

The co-ed league is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 13 and puts emphasis on skills development, sportsmanship and fun. Registration ends Sept. 18 and practice begins the week of Oct. 2.

All players must be Club members. Membership fees are $35 per child. League fees are $20 for the 5- to 7-year-old division and $25 for the 8- to 10-year-old and 11- to 13-year-old divisions. All players receive a team t-shirt.
