Portage H.S. baseball to hold skills camp

Updated: December 2, 2012 2:14PM

Reaffirming the value of year-round athletic training and recreational opportunities, several local organizations are offering indoor sporting activities as cool, blustery weather takes hold of the region.

The Portage High School baseball program will offer its eight-week All Star Skills Camp on several dates throughout the fall and winter including Nov. 10 and 17.

Classes will be conducted at the PHS fieldhouse where players will receive one-on-one instruction and presentations on proper grip, stance, and swing, as well as proper throwing mechanics and fielding. The school coaching staff and varsity Indians players will provide the personalized instruction.

Space is limited and interested players and parents should call head baseball coach Tim Pirowski at 484-1405 to register.

Wheeler cheer team accepting call-outs: Wheeler’s All-Star Angels, “Northwest Indiana’s most accomplished cheer team,” will be hosting half-season call-outs on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. at their gym (679 W. Indiana 130, Wheeler.)

Boys and girls ages 4 to 18 of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. The Angels feature mini, tiny, youth, junior and senior teams giving all kids the opportunity to be on a team.

For more information, call 764-1019, or email IEG_ASA@aol.com.

Lake Station Little League to hold elections: Elections for the Lake Station Little League will be held on at 5 p.m. on Monday at the American Legion Post 100 (1899 Central Ave., Lake Station.) For information, e-mail Karen Knight at kkarlee@aol.com.

13U Steelheads looking for players: The South Shore Steelheads 13U team is currently seeking players to complete their 2013 roster. The club is a competitive travel squad.

Any players interested in scheduling a tryout should call Dave Cooper at 545-1422, or e-mail at coop_365@msn.com.

Valpo Boys and Girls Club accepting coed volleyball players: Valparaiso’s Boys and Girls Club will host a Valparaiso Parks Department-sponsored coed volleyball league for second- through fifth-graders. Registration begins on Monday with the season starting Jan. 7 and running through March 2.

Saturday afternoon games, as well as practices, which will occur weekly on Wednesdays or Thursdays, will be at the Boys and Girls Club (354 Jefferson St., Valparaiso.)

Fees of $55 to $65 include a Boys & Girls Club annual membership. Current members receive $25 off at registration when they present their Club ID. Sign-ups are conducted at the Valpo Parks office (3210 N. Campbell St.) on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Also offered by the city’s parks department is the Discovery Cottage experience. Themed sessions like Fuel Up for Learning, Harvest Time and Thanksgiving Traditions allow kids ages 3 to 12 to discover dance, arts and much more.

The cottage is located at 1155 Harrison Blvd. in Valparaiso. For more information about Valpo Parks programs, call 462-5144 or visit www.valpoparks.org.
