Indoor camps heat up around the region

Indoor activities have been the mainstay of local sports and recreational offerings ever since meteorologosts suggested that mild temperatures have packed up and left the area.
Lake and Porter County schools and training facilities have posted basketball and golf instructional opportunities for youths starting next month. Kids and teens are sure to generate some heat while improving their sports skills.
The Fieldhouse-Merrillville (899 E. 99th Court) recently announced their Holiday Season Basketball Camp for boys and girls in third through 12th grades.
Run by Pro U, the program will feature two sessions and introduce parents and kids to the “Drop and Shop” concept, which allows campers to stay at the Fieldhouse beyond instructional hours while their families scurry around for their Christmas shopping. There is no additional fee for that opportunity.
Session I runs from Dec. 26 to 28 and session II picks up from Jan. 2 to 4. Both classes will be from 9 a.m. to noon.
John Stroia, camp director, has 27 years of involvement with professional and college basketball and 35 years of camp experience. The staff will consist of instructors with professional and college basketball coaching on their résumés.
The camp will focus on basketball fundamentals with a special speed, quickness, agility, and conditioning session.
Fees are $55 per camper and $30 for each additional participant in a family. The cost will increase to $65 per camper after the Dec. 21 deadline. For more information, call the Fieldhouse-Merrillville at 738-2424, or visit thefieldhouse-merrillville.
Portage High School to hold girls basketball camp: Portage High School girls basketball coaches and players are extending an invitation to all Portage girls in sixth through eighth grades for an upcoming “Tip-Off Camp.”
The instructional sessions are set for 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 12 and 13 at the Fegely Middle School gym (5384 Stone Ave). Students of city schools as well as Nativity of Our Savior Catholic School and Portage Christian School are encouraged to attend.

Creekside Golf offering lessons for youngsters, women: Creekside Golf Course and Training Center (2355 Clifford Road, Valparaiso) will roll out several instructional golf sessions for youngsters and women in December.
“For Ladies Only” is set to meet at 9 a.m. Mondays, with afternoon clinics at 2 p.m. Wednesdays and 3 p.m. Saturdays. The price for each is class is $15 plus range balls.
Valparaiso Parks will also offer instructional opportunities for juniors of all skill levels. Several golf sessions are available for youths ages 3 to 18 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in December.
Children and teens can check out the Junior 101 and 202 classes and the Linksters Academy. Each session will incorporate different golf fundamentals. Prices range from $15 to $30 per session plus range balls.
