Lake Central dance team takes first place at regionals

Lake Central High School’s dance team takes to the court and cheers on the Indians at Friday night basketball games. But after the girls’ recent success at a regional competition, the cheers can now be directed at the squad.

Lake Central’s Centralettes competed in their first two regional contests in Illinois and Wisconsin at Universal Dance Association competitions. On Sunday in Milwaukee, they garnered first-place wins in junior varsity and varsity Jazz and Hip Hop categories. The JV Hip Hop team also took home the award for “Best Crowd Appeal.”

The Lake Central Varsity Centralettes are: Megan Barenie, Jenna Blessing, Julia Demma, Kristina Dombovic, Daniella Dombovic, Abigail Emmett, Michelle Gentz, Millie Hiestand, Emma Hupp, Tari Markowski, Brianna Martin, Lindsay McClain, Shannon Putnam, Ashley Roberts, Amanda Roberts, Lauren Skertich, Daniella Soucie, Katie Speckman, Meghan Tar, Allyson Vanek, Katie Vega and Jillian Wilschke.

Junior varsity squad members include: Gabrielle Aloia, Courtney Carlson, Reyna Crothers, Breanna Dobos, Talia Harman, Chrissy Foreman, Stephanie Foster, Megan Helfers, Gina Irwin, Sara Lisac, Marisa Mendoza, Cassandra Morris, Emma Nelson, Adare Pitchford, Kristina Plaskett, Tiffany Polyak, Jill Poplon, Emma Strohacker, Celine Tucker, Nicole Vanek, Kelsie Verhoeve and Michaela Vuckovic.

The Centralettes are trained by Kevin Mathis with staff members Bri Clark, Toya Ambrose, Katie Johnson and Leah Shaffer.

Fieldhouse-Merrillville accepting youth basketball players: Basketball tournament coordinators at the Fieldhouse-Merrillville offer area basketball players a chance to hit the hardwood in the venue’s Christmastime tournament, which is set for Dec. 26 to 28.

Holiday Hoopla offers players a three-game experience with some of Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland’s best youth basketball talent. All games are to scheduled to be played at the Fieldhouse-Merrillville (899 E. 99th Court.)

The tournament is open to boys in grades 4 to 12. Team entry fees are $200, or $175 for three or more teams from the same program. The Cost for Fieldhouse-Merrillville teams is $150.

Hallmark Sports Club looking for soccer players: Hallmark Sports Club II (8328 Colorado St., Merrillville) is offering a variety of soccer competitions heading into the Christmas season and the new year.

Premier youth and high school teams have an option to play different opponents via cross-facility scheduling. Interested squads will get games versus same-age teams at the sister Hallmark I facility in Frankfort, Ill. New teams join a waiting list and are added as spots open.

Online registration is open and must be completed 10 days before the start of each league. Forms may be obtained by visiting hallmarksportsclubii.com.

Tournaments include the North American Indoor Soccer Championship qualifiers, Holiday Break King-of-the-Hill, and the Midwinter Rec/Rec+ tourneys.

The King-of-the-Hill runs from 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 29. NAISC tourneys include: U9-10 boys from 4 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 26; U12 boys and girls from 4 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 27; from noon to 11 p.m. U13/14/16/18 on Dec. 29. The winners may qualify for nationals.

The Rec/Rec+ tourneys for U10 boys and girls are set from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 21, and for U12 and U14 boys and girls from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 3.
