Valpo Parks soccer sign-ups start

Registration for Valpo Parks youth soccer programs has opened early as league coordinators expect teams to fill quickly.
Sign-ups for Spring Coed, Kick-Start, and Back-to-School soccer programs are available at the parks office (3210 N. Campbell, Valparaiso) daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and online at valpoparks.org.
For 3-year-old kickers up to experienced 12-year-old players, the parks department will offer soccer leagues starting in April, June, and August. Fees start at $45 for Spring Coed and Back-to-School soccer, and $30 for Kick-Start soccer.

Porter County Storm looking for players: The Chesterton-based Porter County Storm baseball program is seeking players for the 2013 season. Athletes from Lake, LaPorte, Porter and Newton Counties born anytime during the years 1994, 1995, 1996 and before May 1, 1997 are eligible to play.
Winter workouts are in session and the club is seeking a manager for its 16U team. Interested individuals are asked to send information about themselves and a brief summary of why they would like the position.

Schererville Baseball League still accepting applicants: Online registration continues through Jan. 31 for the Schererville Baseball League’s 2013 season. Playing opportunities are available for ages 4 to 12 in the Cal Ripken League and for players 13 to 15 and 16 to 18 in the Babe Ruth League.
Walk-in sign-ups will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Schererville Town Hall (10 E. Joliet St.). They will also be offered there on from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday.

‘Play Ball’ starts Friday: “Play Ball” is the aim of a free youth baseball camp that is set to begin Friday and run through Feb. 22 in Gary.
Each Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., Gary youth will have the opportunity to develop baseball fundamentals and get the training they need, according to league president Edward French. The sessions will take place at 3510 W. 15th Ave. in Gary.

Lake Station to start Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth registrations: Lake Station’s Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth leagues will host registrations for their upcoming seasons at Riverview Park (2701 Ripley St.) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 to 25 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Jan. 26.

Fieldhouse-Merrillville to host winter basketball leagues: Boys and girls winter basketball leagues and Future Stars sessions are right around the corner at The Fieldhouse-Merrillville (899 East 99th Court.)
Future Stars is geared toward boys and girls from first grade through third grade, with all participants playing on 8-foot baskets. Each session will consist of 45 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of games.
The young players will meet on Saturday mornings from Jan. 19 to March 2 from 10 a.m. to noon for basketball fundamentals training. The cost is $10 per session or $70 for the entire winter season.
Fieldhouse-Merrillville coordinators also remind region athletes that it’s not too late to sign up for the Boys and Girls Winter Basketball Leagues, which tip off Jan. 27.
Winter teams for boys and girls in fourth through eighth grades will be scheduled to play two games a night for one day of each of four weeks. A single elimination tournament is set to start on March 2.
The Fieldhouse-Merrillville is accepting individual and team registration. The cost is $475 per team or $110 for individual registration. Jan. 25 is the sign-up deadline.

Valentines 5K on Feb. 10: The Valentines 5K Run/Walk sponsored by the VROOM Running Club is set to run Feb. 10 in Valparaiso. Registration is in progress.
Celebrating the red holiday, the race offers a unique option: participants may run as an individual, or be paired with a runner of the opposite sex to compete in the couples’ age divisions. Participants can’t have it both ways, though, and can only enter one division.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m. in the north parking lot of Valparaiso High School and finishes indoors in the VHS field house. Runners can receive splits at the one- and two-mile marks.
Awards will include overall male and female winners, masters winners and 162 age-group trophies.
The fee, including a T-shirt, is $20 per participant if registered before Jan. 24 ($15 without T-shirt). After Jan. 24, the fee is $30 with a T-shirt, or $25 without. Race day sign-up fee will be $30.
