As the Northlake Patriots Pop Warner club prepares to host sign-ups in Hammond this weekend, “are you ready for some football?” is recognized as a nearly year-round theme.
The Patriots football, dance and cheer teams invite area youth to participate in their Super Bowl Saturday registration event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Hammond Civic Center (5825 Sohl Ave.)
All prospective athletes are asked to bring a copy of their birth certificate. Weigh-ins, measuring and fittings will take place on site. Fees start at $125 for one child, with a $75 fundraising fee and $50 jersey fee for new players. Payment plans are available; there is a $25 event sign-up discount if all fees are paid in full.
The Hammond-based program is celebrating 2012 junior pee-wee cheer state and regional championships and midget dance state and regional runner-up finishes. On the football side, the Patriots are coming off 2012 junior midget and midget state and league runner-up finishes.
Pop Warner football features youths competing with kids of similar age and size. According to league officials, it is the only youth football program — local, regional and national — that sets and enforces a strict age and weight matrix that reduces the risk of injuries. PW Spirit (cheer and dance) program provides kids the opportunity to perform in an organized, supervised, safety-oriented environment.

Zumba classes available: Crown Point Parks and Recreation and the Pilates Center of Northwest Indiana are offering Zumba instruction this winter.
The dance class focuses on hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program. Instruction for sessionNo. 2 at the Crown Point Civic Center is set for 7:30 to 8:25 p.m. on Tuesdays from March 1 to April 12. There will not be a class on March 15.
Fees for the offering are $42 for residents and $55 for non-residents. For more information, visit crownpoint.in.gov/parksweb.
Crown Point to host junior football league registration: Open to Crown Point-area youths ages 7 to 14, the Crown Point Junior Bulldog Football League will host sign-ups on March 2, 3, 9 and 10.
The registration will be from noon to 5 p.m. at the Junior Bulldogs football field at 1401 E. North Street in Crown Point. First-time players must bring a copy of their birth certificate.
Interested youths do not have to live in Crown Point. There are no weight restrictions in this league and the kids play among their own age groups. Fourteen-year-old players must be in eighth grade.
