Lake Central 5th-graders make boys basketball state finals

Lake Central’s fifth-grade boys basketball team qualified for the state finals after winning the championship at the USSFA Indiana boys basketball school team tournament held on Saturday and Sunday.

At Franklin, Lake Central went 4-0 in the tournament and defeated Center Grove in the championship game, 54-40. The victory earned the Indians a spot at the state finals, which will be played on March 16 and 17 in Noblesville.

Pop Warner club accepting applicants: The Northlake Patriots Pop Warner club invites area youth to participate in its football, cheer and dance registration event at the Whiting Community Center (1938 Clark St.) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

All prospective players are asked to bring a copy of their birth certificate. Weigh-ins, measuring and fittings will take place onsite. Fees start at $125 for one child, with a $75 fundraising fee and $50 jersey fee for new players.

Elite travel club sets tryout schedule: Coordinators at the Fieldhouse-Merrillville announced tryouts for the Elite travel club program.

Boys and girls in grades 4 to 12 are encouraged to attend evaluations starting at 7 p.m. March 8 and 15 at the venue at 899 E. 99th Court. There is a $10 tryout fee and participants are asked to bring their own basketballs.

The Elite club will play more than 30 games during a season spanning from March to July. Uniforms, practice, and special training with Mike Procopio and Frank Eksten from Franciscan St. Anthony Sports Medicine Institute are all part of the competitive program.

Westfield to host fundraiser walk: Westfield Southlake Mall will host the National Kidney Foundation’s second annual indoor fundraising walk March 23.

Check-in for the event at 2109 Southlake Mall in Merrillville is at 10 a.m. with the walk starting at 11 a.m.

The walk is designed to raise money and show support for the more than 1,300 patients on life-saving kidney dialysis in Northwest Indiana. Last year the charitable endeavor raised $23,000.
