Portage High School offers softball clinic

Portage-area girls looking to brush up on their catching, hitting and pitching skills are invited by the Portage High School softball team to a youth clinic.

The clinic, open to all elementary and middle school age girls, is slated for Saturday at the PHS fieldhouse. Hitting sessions will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and pitching and catching from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Fees are $25 per training module or $40 for both. Checks may be made out to PHS softball.

Little League sign-ups: The South Haven Little League baseball organization will hold its final registration for the 2013 baseball season at the South Haven Boys and Girls Club (723 Long Run Rd. Valparaiso) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Registrants are asked to bring their birth certificate to sign-ups. The total fee per player, which cover registration, a uniform, and maintenance fee is $105. Each player will be required to take part in fundraising activities as well.

Gump Hump 5K in Griffith: At the 5K run set for Saturday at Oak Ridge Prairie Park in Griffith, “Run, Forrest, Run!” could be a popular rallying cry.

The Forrest Gump Hump 5k trail run, part of the Crazy Legs Race Series, will kick off with sign-ups at 8:30 a.m. Race organizers expect participants to realize a “fun and challenging course design in a low-key atmosphere.” The event entry fee is $25, and a T-shirt is included with registration.

CLRS runs promote non-pavement races in the Northwest Indiana through the development and management of new and existing runs.

Valpo soccer registration: Valparaiso Parks is offering kids from ages 12 down to 3 a variety of soccer choices. Registration is open until Friday for spring coed, kick-start, and back to school soccer options. The seasons start in April, June and August.

Fees are $45 for residents and $57 for non-residents for spring and BTS soccer, and $30 and $42 for kick-start soccer. All games are played at the city’s Westside Park.

Girls softball registration: Also in Valparaiso, 6U girls softball registration continues through Friday. Players must be ages 5 or 6 as of Dec. 31, 2012. Home games for this league will be at Tower Park. Throughout the season the teams will compete against Boone Grove, Morgan, Washington, Kouts, LaWanna, South Central, and other Valparaiso teams.

Portage men’s and women’s softball: Portage Township Department of Parks & Recreation is now accepting registrations for women’s and men’s summer softball leagues and is offering an early-bird discount on payments made by March 15.

Leagues are set to begin the week of April 15 with game times at 6 p.m. at Fessler Fields at Haven Hollow Park (330 W. 700 N., Valparaiso).

Each league will play an eight-week, 16-game schedule featuring a doubleheader each night. The men’s upper division will play on Mondays and the lower division on Wednesdays. The women’s league is scheduled for Tuesdays.

Rosters will be available at the Portage Township Trustee’s Office (3484 Airport Road, Portage.)

The deadline to sign up is April 1 at 3 p.m. Registration fees are $475 per team; early birds get a $50 discount.

Umpires clinic: An open-book national certification test for first-time umpires will be given and returning umpires can be recertified at a clinic for Babe Ruth baseball umpires hosted at the Hammond Civic Center on from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 23.
