Here’s the start of my annual list of region bowlers who have qualified for our annual Post-Tribune Awards Tournaments that I hope can show up.
The 11th annual youth scholarship event will be May 11 at Stardust Bowl II in Hobart (girls and boys in separate tourneys), while the adult events will be on May 25 and 26 at Stardust Bowl III in Dyer — women on Saturday and men on Sunday.
I understand some can’t make it due to other commitments but there have been some people who qualify every year who don’t show and it makes me sad.
Not to mention names, but I can’t help myself — past men’s champions Mark Millsap, Gary Purcell and Timm Sieber; past women’s champs Chris Munsie, Colleen Lidster and Linda Olszewski.
I mean, they are free. You can’t beat that price.
Even with our entry fee changes (Kings and Queens of the Week are now $5 instead of free, while the highest entry is just $15 for men’s 300 games and women’s 600 series), the P-T events are by far the most economical in Northwest Indiana.
So that means I’m begging for some of the inexpensive entry recipients to compete — sport shot champs Kevin Kullman, Mike Svilar, Al Dobrowolski and Ryan Slosser, or even a couple women’s sport shot winners in Michelle Calhoun and Katrina Elwardt.
And then there’s those Kings and Queens of the Week, such as Jordan Johnston (his brother Jay also qualified), Tim Bales, Mark Crowe, Ryan Alberson, Alyson Rodziewicz, Sallie Warner, Alice Veenstra or Autumn Snow.
In the 11th annual youth events — the only newspaper-sponsored youth scholarship bowling tournaments in the state — I’d love to see a large contingent of high school bowlers there on May 11, especially from the seven teams that competed in the state finals. I’d love to see Lake Central, Highland and Hobart boys on hand, as well as Boone Grove, Lake Central, Portage and Highland girls. Maybe a Boone and LC girl can wind up in the stepladder to face off again. How about a LC and Hobart boy in a sort of rematch of their stepladder team match at state.
I know it’s wishful thinking across the board, but a tournament director can dream, can’t he?
The qualifier lists have been posted at post-trib.com/sports and will be updated each week through the end of the season. For more details, call or text (219) 331-5600 or send an email to email@example.com.
