Reservations available for ‘Battle of the Badges’ basketball tournament

Usually the first to arrive at an accident scene, local first responders will have the opportunity to make sporting fun a priority at a charity basketball tournament in May.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Unit is accepting reservations for teams from area police and fire departments to compete in the sixth annual “Battle of the Badges” basketball tournament. The three-day event is slated for May 2, 9 and 10.

Tournament games will be held at the South Haven facility (723 Long Run Road, Valparaiso). Team registration is $150. Admission to the games will be $3 for adults and $1 for children accompanied by an adult.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Unit. A trophy will be presented to the winning team.

Boys & Girls Clubs to hold annual bike ride: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County looks to encourage Northwest Indiana families to hit the trails for the second annual “Great Futures Family Bike Ride.”

Registration is open for the non-competitive ride that will take place on the Prairie-Duneland Trail on May 11. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 8:30 a.m. at Countryside Park in Portage (5250 U.S. 6) and the Duneland Trailhead in Chesterton (108 S. 15th St.).

The cost is $7 per rider, ages 6 and up. Children ages 5 and under participate at no cost. Free t-shirts are available for the first 300 riders ages 6 and up who register by April 26.

Highland Parks taking last-minute volleyball entries: Highland Parks & Recreation is taking last-minute team entries for this weekend’s women’s and power co-ed (four men, two women) volleyball tournament at the Lincoln Center (2450 Lincoln St., Highland).

The women’s tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue until about 3:30 p.m. The co-ed tournament is set for Sunday, with the same hours. Participants are asked to arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

Entry fee is $105 per team.

Baseball, softball lessons available: Symtec Instruction is offering baseball and softball lessons in Northwest Indiana by appointment from the Valparaiso area.

The instruction is for players of all ages and will focus on fielding, throwing and hitting.
