Leon’s “world’s fastest triathlon” returns to Hammond’s Wolf Lake Park on Sunday morning, June 2, for the 30th anniversary of the Olympic-distance swim, bike and run event.

Beginning with opening ceremonies at 7:30 a.m., Leon’s Triathlon kicks off at 8 a.m. Weather permitting, a salute to military veterans will include the presentation of the traveling Garrison Flag, a 21-gun salute, a performance by a military choir and a flyover by the Lima Lima Flight Team.

Last year thousands of spectators from around the nation gathered along the Hammond route – with its .9-mile swim, 24.6-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run – to cheer on more than 750 participants.

Leon’s will premiere to a national TV audience on a Comcast SportsNet broadcast on July 4.

Crown Point takes consolation championship: Ending their season with a 15-2 loss to Guerin Catholic High School in the championship consolation bracket in Noblesville, Ind., the Crown Point Lacrosse club varsity team recently honored their graduating seniors.

Including the consolation game thumping, CPL earned a 12-11 record (6-3, conference) in the 2013 campaign. The young club started off with a 5-5 record in 2011, and then went 12-9 last year.

Fourteen Crown Point-area youth filled out one team in their inaugural season, and that number grew to nearly three-dozen participants in the program this year.

The Bulldogs honored seniors Blaize Borovich, Joe Kelnhofer, Nick Valentino, Jacob Voss, and Tyler Welker, who will part ways with the organization as they graduate. CP also features JV, U15 and U13 squads.
