GARY — Antonio Falluca wears two big wraps on both hands, from his elbow down to his wrist.
The Chesterton resident plays golf maybe once a week because arthritis beats up his joints.
But Falluca still knows how to get the ball in the hole when it matters.
He shot a 1-under-70 Saturday in the senior division of the Gary Amateur, taking a one-stroke lead over Charlie Prewitt.
Falluca, who took time off work, spent all week practicing his chipping and putting. The work paid off for the small greens at Gleason.
He made two 20-foot bombs for birdie — on Nos. 5 and 13 — and he shot a 3-under par 32 on the back nine. He was on the only senior player under par.
Falluca has been a consistent top-five finisher in this tournament ever since he started playing. He’s hoping to change that Sunday.
“I really want to win,” he said.
Falluca got himself out of another big hole on No. 7 after he chili-dipped a chip and then left himself a long putt out of the fringe above the hole.
He made that and saved par.
“Hopefully, I can have another round like that,” he said.
Prewitt is definitely someone that will give him a battle.
Prewitt won the senior division the last time it was at Gleason in 2008.
Prewitt had a ho-hum round, making two birdies and two bogeys. He did chip in for birdie on No. 9.
“I just couldn’t make anything,” he said of his putts.
Mike Forney, with a 72, is one shot back.
In the super senior division, Marv Selby, a multiple winner in the senior division, leads John Brindley by seven strokes. Selby shot a 72.
Natalie Achten is way ahead in the women’s division after shooting 82.
Shot of the day: Larry Achten of Chesterton had the best shot of the round, making an eagle two on No. 2. Achten chipped in from 98 yards. His ball hit the side of the green and then spun right into the hole.
Skins: These players won skins: Achten ( 2), Tom Zimmerman (17); Seniors:Dan Donahue (17), Frank Filipiak (4), Mike Forney (1), John Wood (7), Steve Lashenik (10), Hiawatha Burnett (18) and John Brindley (2). You can pick up the proceeds at the Gleason Clubhouse.
