GARY — Charles Prewitt was happy to get back into the winner’s circle.
He wasn’t necessarily happy with the way he played to get there.
Prewitt, who won the Gary Amateur in 2008 when it was last back at South Gleason, made it back-to-back at Gleason when he eked out a one-stroke victory over Antonio Falluca for the senior title.
Prewitt shot a not-so-smooth 76, finishing with a two-round total of 147 (5-over par).
The difference in Falluca’s game and Prewitt’s was on full display on the closing hole when Prewitt left his approach left of the green, about 20 yards away, and he flopped one up to about two feet. He made the putt for par.
Falluca, meanwhile, playing behind him, missed his approach about 30 yards short of the green on the right. Falluca hit his chip to about 10 feet and then missed the putt for par.
“My game was just bad,” Falluca said. “I just choked.”
Prewitt’s iron game was equally bad, but he was able to navigate his way around Gleason, a course he’s very familiar with, by making pars when he missed the green.
He only made one birdie in two days, but he was able to scramble for pars on Nos. 2, 3, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 18.
“I was getting up and down all day,” he said.
Super Seniors: Marv Selby, who has won multiple times in the Senior Division, took his game to a different age bracket this year.
Selby cruised to a six shot victory over Bob Adams in the plus 65 division of the Gary Amateur Sunday. His round of 80 gave him a two-day total of 155.
Selby said the course, with the tees back and pins tucked, played at least four shots harder than the opening round.
A Flight: Mark Barenie got back in the winner’s circle. Barenie, whose son Mike also played in the tournament, won the A-Flight, following up an opening round of 75 with a 73. He defeated Garrett Bianchi and Dale Jalovecky by one stroke. Barenie won the Championship flight of the Gary Am in 1997.
Women’s Flight: Natalie Achten cruised to a victory on the Women’s Division. Achten shot an 85 Sunday. Her two round total was 167. Achten last played at Gleason in the late 80’s with her future husband, Larry Achten in the Gary Am. The two were just married a few years ago.
Skins: Tom Donahue and Steve Lashenik each won skins on Saturday. The proceeds can be picked up at clubhouse at Gleason.
