Phoenix softball to hold tryouts

Girls in the 14U and 12U age range who are interested in competitive softball are encouraged to attend tryouts with the Phoenix fastpitch softball organization of Valparaiso.

Tryouts for the 12U and 14U teams will be held at the Valparaiso High School varsity diamond. Coach Jim Smith will conduct evaluations for the 12U team from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 11 and 6-8 p.m. Aug. 14. Coach Rod Thomas will conduct evaluations for the 14U on from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 11 and from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 13.

Additionally, the 16U Phoenix team is seeking a pitcher to play showcase-level tournaments with the ASA ‘A’ state championship squad.

BMX clinic: What is totally free and a great opportunity to find out what BMX is all about? Today’s new rider clinic at Imagination Glen BMX.

This week the Portage Parks & Recreation Department announced the addition of the clinic session prior to the regularly scheduled single-points race at the city venue (2190 State Road 149.)

Local expert BMX rider Corey Ross will lead the clinic, which is exclusively for inexperienced racers. Ross will be attending college later this month and this will be the last opportunity for newbies to train with him this season.

The all-ages clinic will start at 3 p.m. and will focus on the basics of BMX racing. Loaner bikes and helmets will be available.

Registration for the race is from 5-6:30 p.m. and racing starts at around 7 p.m. Rider fees are $10 for class/cruiser and $5 for open/strider with discounts for participating in both. USA BMX memberships are required to race and one-day trial memberships are available at the track.

CP fall ball signups: Fall ball in Crown Point will roll out its last signup date for players ages 12-14 and 15-18.

League registration will be held from 1-3 .m. Saturday, at the Dome at the Crown Point Fun Center (1301 Merrillville Road, Crown Point.) Full teams are welcome.

Costs are $125 for Crown Point players and $145 for non-CP players.

Storm seeking players: A few player openings remain for the Porter County Storm fall ball league.

Players born in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and prior to May 1, 1998 are eligible to play on teams composed of 15- to 19-year-olds. Registration is ongoing until positions are filled.

Adult indoor softball: TurtleSlo Sports is accepting players for its adult indoor softball league that will play at the Dome in Crown Point.

The co-ed league is slated to start on Sept. 3 with the men’s league following on Sept. 5.

Team fees for the eight-game schedule are $500. This includes a single-elimination tournament.
