A group of local runners represented the region well at the recent 2013 AAU National Junior Olympics.
No Limits Track Club earned several distinctions in the event hosted at Eastern Michigan University’s Olds-Marshall Track at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich., from July 27 to Aug. 3.
Gerrod Tucker of Hammond finished sixth in the 3,000-meter race walk and Rashad Shine of Munster finished seventh in the 1,500.
From among 10,000 youth participants, No Limits athletes also earned top-25 finishes in various events. They include: Dontae Adams, Michael Perkins, Jarren Thomas, Chequina Cooper, Imani Mitchell, Gerald Tucker, Dylan Rimkus, Demetruis Rias, Devan James, Imari Mitchell, Precious Perkins, Paris Nunnally, Nasir Biddings, Dylan Jones, Jordenne Hudson, Jordan Smith, Kylee Marshall, Cheffronio Cooper, Marqui Glinsey, Adeyah Shine, Ja’Diah Belk and Shana Cooper.
Omni to host 5K walk/run: Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness-Schererville will offer a walk or run event that is suitable for nearly any person with a “can do” spirit.
On Sept. 21, Omni will host its second annual Anyone Can Do A 5K walk/run and 1-mile walk. Promising the event will be a “great way to begin your Saturday,” coordinators are looking for a good turnout for the 8 a.m. start.
The race route was selected because it would be agreeable with both beginners and seasoned runners. The 5K path through the winding, tree-lined Plum Creek subdivision is well marked and flat. There are no double backs and the course is located across from Omni (221 U.S. Rt. 41, Schererville).
Participants who place first, second or third in each age division will receive awards. Competitive runners are welcome.
At last year’s event, a Jolly Rogers pirate troupe and a birthday celebration theme were winners in the T-shirt decorating contest. Single participants and teams are again encouraged to decorate apparel to show off their personalities. The T-shirt contest offers first-, second- and third-place prizes for the most fun, original themes.

Steelheads looking for players: The South Shore Steelheads 14U travel baseball team is looking for two players — preferably pitchers or shortstops — to complete their roster for the 2014 season. Players must be 14 or younger by April 30, 2014. Any player interested in trying out should contact coach Dave Cooper at 545-1422 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
Half-marathon, 5K and kids’ 1K set for Sunday: The Portage Parks Foundation will host a half-marathon, 5K, or kids’ 1K on Sunday and all finishers will receive an ice cream cone at the finish line. The 13.1-mile course is spent mostly on the paved Prairie-Duneland and Iron Horse bike trails with some surface roads.
The 5K course is on the Prairie-Duneland trail and neighborhood streets. It is a flat and fast course. The kids’ 1K fun run (up to age 12) will be held in the park near the finish line.
