Rugby club plans celebration

Pitching the idea of a major get-together, members of the NWI Exiles Rugby Football Club announced that they will be celebrating the organization’s 40th anniversary on Saturday.
All current members and alumni of the Exiles club are invited to join them for an 8 a.m. breakfast at Lake Park Restaurant, which is across the street from the rugby field in Hobart.
The Exiles will hit the pitch for their regular league A side match versus Rockford at 1 p.m. An “Old Boys” game will follow.
The anniversary event will conclude with picnics following the matches.

Smiley to head Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County: Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County recently announced that Ryan Smiley was appointed by the board of directors to serve as the organization’s president.
Smiley has been fulfilling the duties of president on an interim basis since Chuck Leer retired last spring.
“The last several months have been a period of transition for the Clubs,” said Tim Rice, Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County Board Chairman. “We have had the opportunity to see Ryan deliver exceptional leadership in that transition. We’re confident in Ryan’s commitment to doing what’s best for Porter County’s kids, his focus on measuring outcomes to determine success and his strong stewardship of resources.”
Valpo Parks offerings: Valparaiso’s Parks and Recreation department has several programs that are presently running.
Volleyball enthusiasts who are familiar with the game and rules are encouraged to apply for the part-time evening official positions for the league that plays from late October through March. When contacting Valparaiso Parks, be sure to fill in “Volleyball Official” for the position applied for field.
Registration is available for the Play Pals group for kids. At the department’s Discovery Cottage, youngsters can met other children and play basketball, go fishing, work on puzzles and do other activities.
The Cottage is located at 1155 Harrison, Valparaiso. This program runs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays from today through Oct. 24. Fees are $22 for city residents, and $34 for non-residents.
Group hayrides are rolling down the old dirt roads through Nov. 3. These can be great gatherings for family outings, service groups, youth organizations and more. And the hay wagon has been completely redone with new seating and siderails.
The hour-and-half hayrides are available on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Fees are $60 for city groups, and $72 for non-residents.
