Not a creature was stirring, according to the classic Yuletide tale, on the night before Christmas. On the day after the holiday, however, at the area’s big house for basketball, plenty of activity will be found at a unique camp for youths.
Pro U recently announced its “Drop and Shop” holiday season Fundamentals Basketball Camp sessions that are slated for Dec. 26 and 27, and Jan. 2 and 3 at The Fieldhouse-Merrillville (899 E. 99th Court, Merrillville). The concept is built around parents dropping their children off at camp at 10 a.m. and accomplishing their Christmastime shopping at local retailers until the completion of open gym at 6 p.m.
Camp sessions are open to boys and girls in grades 3 to 12. Instruction runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by an open gym period, to which campers receive complimentary admission.
The cost of the Pro U camp is $50 per participant and $30 for each additional family member. A special team rate of $400 is available to squads with a maximum of 10 players.
Camp director John Stroia has more than 25 years of college coaching and camp coordinating experience. He has worked with athletes as an instructor for coaches Bobby Knight, Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski, as well as from the coaching bench at Ball State, Ohio State-Lima, Youngstown State, Weber State and Bowling Green.
