In the first two months of the new year, Valparaiso Parks will roll out two youth sports camps as the department partners with players from local collage teams.
Sign-ups continue through Jan. 10 for the Valparaiso Parks baseball and softball skills clinics that are set to run for 90 inutes on Jan. 12, 19, and 26. Baseball sessions will be led by Purdue North Central players and city volunteers, while Valparaiso University softball players will run softball lessons.
Each sport’s fundamentals are the main topics set for the clinics. Both sections will meet at the Valparaiso High School fieldhouse with baseball starting at 4 p.m. and softball meeting at 6 p.m.
Also offered through the city’s park department is a youth soccer skills camp offered in sections for 3- to 6-year-olds and 7- to 12-year-olds. Players from VU’s soccer team will lead lessons at VHS. Registration continues through Jan. 24.
The one-hour camps are set for Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for the younger set and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for the older group.
The price per camp is $15 for Valparaiso residents and $27 for others. There is no additional cost for youngsters already enrolled in an equivalent department offering.

Fieldhouse-Merrillville to conduct basketball camp: The Fieldhouse-Merrillville is set to host their John Stroia PRO U Drop and Shop Holiday Season Fundamentals of Basketball Camp. Besides its long name, the sessions are also big on teaching hoops basics to boys and girls in grades 3 to 12.
The camps will run on Jan. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by an open gym period, to which campers receive complimentary admission. The concept is built around parents dropping their children off at the facility (899 E. 99th Court, Merrillville) at 10 a.m. and accomplishing their Christmastime shopping at local retailers until the completion of open gym at 6 p.m.
The cost of the Pro U. camp is $50 per participant and $30 for each additional family member.
