Rec Roundup: Hobart Pop Warner football, cheer to hold sign-ups

Are you ready for some football — sign-ups?
Hobart’s Pop Warner Little Scholars officials will host registration for the 2014 football and cheerleading seasons from 6 to 8 p.m. March 4 and 6 at the Hobart Police Station (705 E. 4th St.)
Registration for team rosters will be on a first come, first served basis. Football and cheer participants must be present for uniform sizing, division allocation, and initial weigh-ins for football players. All required documents are due at registration or the youth will be placed on a waiting list.
Registration fees are $240, with a $10 discount to be applied for each additional sibling registered. Required items to bring to registration are: original birth certificate with a copy, and payment.

YMCA hosts free-throw contest: Competition for Griffith area youths aspiring to become Northwest Indiana free-throw champions is set to begin the first round at the Griffith Family YMCA on Saturday.
Registration at the facility in the old Franklin School (201 N Griffith Blvd.) will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the contest starting at 3 p.m. Separate divisions for boys and girls of U9, U11 and U13 will use different equipment: U9 and U11 shooting with a 10-foot basket, 12-foot foul line and 28.5-inch ball; U13 using a 10-foot basket, 15-foot foul line, and an official size ball (29.5 inches).
The best at shooting from the charity stripe, the top boy and girl in each division, will represent the local YMCA at championships that will be hosted at Purdue Calumet in Hammond on March 16.

Portage Twp. parks accepting softball registration: The Portage Township department of parks and recreation is accepting registrations for 2014 women’s and men’s softball leagues through noon on April 18.
Leagues begin on the week of May 5 with 6 p.m. start times at Fessler Fields at Haven Hollow Park (330 W. 700 N., Valparaiso).
The women’s league takes the field on Tuesdays for eight weeks, in which 16 games are played. Both the upper and lower divisions of the men’s league also play for eight weeks for a total of 16 games on Mondays and Wednesdays.
All athletes must be at least 18 to play. Registration cost is $475 per team. Squads are required to purchase softballs from the Township parks department.
Rosters may be picked up at the Portage Township Trustee’s Office (3484 Airport Road, Portage).

30-over volleyball league: Just for those 30 and older, TurtleSlo Sports Leagues, LLC is forming a Friday night volleyball league with open gym starting March 7.
Set to meet at Fuel Fitness in Crown Point (1516 North Main St.), the volleyball league will abide by old-school rules and be designed for fun, first and foremost. The facility will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on league nights.
The fee for each player is $5. Once four teams are formed league action will commence.

Chesterton youth football camp: The Chesterton High School football program will host the Trojan Frozen Football Yoiuth Skills Camp, its first youth camp. The camp will run March 2, 9 and 16 with separate two-hour sessions for students in grades 1-3 (12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.) and grades 4-6 (2 p.m.-3:30 p.m.).
The cost is $45 per camper, $80 for two campers and $100 for three or more campers per family.
