PUC softball to host camp

Updated: March 28, 2014 8:59AM

Purdue Calumet softball is pitching its 2014 Spring Camp to area athletes, seeking to improve all aspects of their game.

On March 22 at the Fitness and Recreation Center on the Hammond campus, two sessions — the first with a focus on pitchers and catchers, and the second working on hitting and base running skills — will be hosted by Purdue Cal softball coach Heather Tarter and staff.

Each session costs $30 with the option to purchase both sessions for $55.

For more information, call Tarter at 989-8301, or visit www.purduecalsports.com/fanzone/camps.

YMCA to hold blood drive: The Bloodmobile will be paying a visit to the Southlake Family YMCA on March 10.

The need is urgent. According to the Red Cross, the long, cold winter has resulted in thousands of uncollected blood and platelet donations.

Blood donation opportunities will be available at the Y (1450 S. Court St.) from 8 a.m. to noon. Appointments can be made in advance by calling 800-RED-CROSS or by visiting www.redcrossblood.org (enter sponsor code: slakeymca).

Valpo parks releases winter, spring schedule: Officials at the Valparaiso parks department released a listing of winter and spring activities for which registration continues.

Rosters are available for the adult co-ed soccer league at a team price of $750 plus $12 per non-resident player. Individual players can sign up at a price of $75 for a resident or $87 for a non-resident. Rosters or registration are due by April 16.

Men, women or co-ed (adult) teams will play in separate divisions in a double elimination wiffle ball tournament. The tourney draw is set for June 3, and the event will be played on the weekend of June 7. Awards will be given for best team name, sportsmanship and tourney champ. Fees are $50 per team, with a May 28 registration deadline.

Registration is ongoing for girls fast pitch, coed T-ball, boys rookie baseball, Babe Ruth, and Cal Ripken leagues through the Valpo Parks. Deadlines range from March 1 through May 16.

For information about these or other Valpo Parks offerings, or to register for an activity, visit the parks office at 3210 N. Campbell St., call 462-5144, or go to www.ValpoParks.org.
