White Sox GM Rick Hahn says payroll is high enough to win

The White Sox’ payroll figures to be about $109 million to $110 million on Opening Day, about $12 million more than last year to start the season.

General manager Rick Hahn said that should be enough.

“We have enough money to win. We won the World Series in 2005 with a $75 million payroll,” he said.

The Sox ranked 11th in payroll last year. They were second to the Detroit Tigers ($132 million) in the American League Central. The Sox ranked 13th in 2005.

If needed, Hahn said he “absolutely” will be equipped to add if the team is contending at mid-season. He said chairman Jerry Reinsdorf always has operated that way.

Other highlights of Hahn’s and manager Robin Ventura’s discussion with fans Saturday at SoxFest:

◆ Hahn alluded to rumors that he explored a trade for left fielder Jason Kubel to beef up the shortage of left-handed hitting. He said it doesn’t make sense to take at-bats from still-blossoming Dayan Viciedo.

◆ Ventura wants to put more emphasis on situational hitting in spring training. The Sox ranked sixth in the AL in strikeouts last season.

◆ Ventura cited pitching, defense and “playing well together” as the team’s strengths.

◆ Said Hahn: “We feel [Nos.] 1 through 12, our pitching staff is as good as anybody’s in the league.”

◆ Fans had to be turned away for the seminar on the 2005 World Series with Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede, Aaron Rowand and Hawk Harrelson.

Flowers ready

Management is confident that all Tyler Flowers needs to prove his offensive worth is regular at-bats. The Sox catcher can’t wait.

“Last year it was like, ‘It would be nice to get a hit today so I don’t have to sit on 0-for-4 for 10 days,’ ” he said. “It’s going to be nice to know I’m going to get four at-bats tomorrow.

“The approach last year, it was tough when you don’t see that many pitches. Swing hard and get in the best position I can to get a good pitch and cut it loose. It was a challenge and I enjoyed the challenge, but do I want to do it again? No. It’s up to me to earn that spot for the future.’’
