Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland named managers Robin Ventura of the White Sox and John Gibbons of the Toronto Blue Jays as American League coaches for the All-Star Game next month.
The game will be at the New York Mets’ Citi Field on July 16. Ventura played for the Mets’ last NL pennant winner in 2000. Gibbons played for the Mets and managed in their minor league system.
Leyland’s Tigers chased the Sox for much of the 2012 season, finally tracking them down in the final two weeks of the season and winning the AL Central by three games. Leyland said Ventura “made it look easy” in his first year as manager.
Leyland also will have his Tigers coaches on his All-Star staff.
