The White Sox will hire Oakland Athletics minor-league hitting coordinator Todd Steverson as their hitting coach, a major-league source confirmed Friday.

The announcement is expected after the World Series, when the Sox are also expected to announce the signing of $68 million Cuban slugger Jose Dariel Abreu. One of Steverson’s biggest responsibilities will be to oversee Abreu’s transition to major-league pitching.

Steverson, 41, was a first-base coach with the Athletics in 2009 and ’10 and was a manager in their farm system from 2005 to ’08. His minor-league managerial record is 297-264. He began his coaching career in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system.

A cousin of former Sox and Detroit Tigers outfielder Ron LeFlore, Steverson played briefly in the majors, batting .256 with two home runs and six RBI over 30 games with the Tigers and one with the San Diego Padres.

Steverson attracted some attention in 2012 as an interim manager in a Class A game when he instructed pitchers to balk to allow the winning run to score against his team in the 17th and 18th innings. His team had used its pitchers and was using position players to pitch, and Steverson was trying to protect players from injury. The California League president fined Steverson and banned him from any league dugout during a game for one year, citing integrity issues.

Steverson replaces Jeff Manto, who was fired after two seasons as hitting coach. The Sox were fourth in runs in the American League in 2012 but plummeted to last in 2013.
